Our Upcoming Events January February March April May June July August September October November December May 18-20, 2012 Backpacking in PA ($21) NEW Complete the Survey at this link or print and turn in the Choice of Program Form by April 27 or as soon as possible Permission slip - due May 8 Raccoon Creek State Park trails State Park Map Directions (105 miles, 2 hours) Saturday Program Older scouts backpacking. This will include the Philmont Shakedown. Crews broken into 10s. [Friday night Souix, Saturday night Pioneer campsite] Permission required from ASM Weber.. Troop One Backpackers - shorter backpack for experienced scouts.. This will be an experienced overnighter at an introductory level. Open to those who are prepared and are not ready to attend the fuller trip. [Friday night Souix, Saturday night Pioneer campsite] Permission from ASM Biggs. Younger Scouts and scouts not backpacking will hike and explore a wilderness area (5 mile hike) Newest scouts - All will do the five mile hike (AM) and fireman chit (PM) if there is time. Campsite is the Souix campsite for both nights. Sunday return will be 4pm Visiting REI in Pittsburgh (11:00 am to 1:30 pm) see their wares at rei.com. 24 miles, 30 minutes from camp. directions directions home from REI (114 miles, 2 hours) June 2012 High Adventure month -- Permission slips - available from each contingent leader. Philmont (Crew 2001) or Northern Michigan Wilderness Adventure (Crew 2001) - June 27 - July 2, 2012 Permission slip This is a six day adventure which includes camping, swimming, hiking and exploring the area along the National Lakeshore including Sleeping Bear Dune in Northwest Michigan. The Crew will spend 2 days backpacking on North Manitou Island, a designated remote wilderness area. Participants in this activity will experience a moderate level of physical activity. Limited cell phone service is expected in some locations. Current BSA Annual Health and Medical Records are required to have Parts A, B & C completed. AGENDA: Wednesday June 27, the Crew will drive to Empire, Michigan. Thursday will be spent exploring the National Lakeshore including a dune climb, swimming and/or lazy river tubing on the Platte River and a tour of the National Seashore Lifesaving Rescue Station Museum. Friday we will board the ferry to N. Manitou Island for 2 days of backpacking. Leave No Trace protocols will be strictly adhered to on the island. Sunday we return to the mainland for a tour of the Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City, swimming and a walking tour of the city. October 19-21, 2012 Laurel Caverns Permission slip (not yet available) older scouts will do climbing and rappelling in the Cavern Heritage Scout Reservation (where we stayed in 2009 the 2012 decision still needs to be made) We camped in the field next to Great Meadows Shelter Map of Camp Independence ... near the main entrance. To see where Camp Independence fits in Heritage Scout Reservation see this map. Laurel Caverns (get waivers at this link) caving - BSA and American Speleological Society on caving and cave safety. While Laurel Caverns will let 12 and 13 yr olds in their lower caverns the Guide to Save Scouting limits this to 14 and up. Younger than 14 will have to go to the upper cave. Large rock formations provide a beautiful backdrop to a historic covered bridge. Camp Falling Rock's facilities include: A large Dining Hall, plenty of lodges and tent camping sites, a pool, a rifle range, a climbing tower and an activity field. Watch here for our next service opportunity. Troop One Backpackers (ASM Biggs) This is a group interested in developing their outdoor skills and to take part in backpacking. Scouts learn and practice to qualify for regular backpacking trip. One trip is during the May 18-20 Campout Hiking Merit Badge Hikes (with ASM Biggs) April 7 - 10 miles May 12 - 10 miles May 26 - 10 miles June 9 - 10 miles July 28 - 20 miles Look for more dates to be announced. These are tentative and will all start at 8:30 am. Cycling Days (with Mr. Kostura) Work on Cycling MB or just have fun. Saturdays April 28 May 12 June 16 July 28 August 25 All rides start at 9:00 am. Locations are announced by email before each event. Helmets are required. Two adults required on all rides. Rifle Team Dates (ASM Kitska) See Mr. Kitska for team membership and permission to attend. Venturing Crew Sponsored Backpacking trips (Keith Weber, AA Crew 2001, ASM 1) March 23, 24 and 25 – Camp Butler and CVNP Meet at Camp Butler on Friday night, Saturday morning hiking from Butler / Manatoc into the CVNP and back to Camp Butler and camp in one of the outpost campsites. Total mileage will be around 8 to 10 miles. (Permission required from Crew 2001) April 27, 28 and 29 - Hickory Creek Wilderness in the Allegheny National Forest April Permission Slip Meet at 1^st Baptist church on Friday night and drive over to the trailhead at the Hearts Content campground. Hit the trail on Sat morning and spend the night on the trail, 3 mile hike out on Sunday morning. This is a loop trail total mileage around 12 – 14. (Permission required from Crew 2001) May 18, 19 and 20 – Raccoon Creek State Park, PA (only 100 miles from Akron) May Permission Slip We will be going in conjunction with Troop 1. The Crew and Venture Patrol will be backing on the backpacking loop with a total mileage of around 15 miles. The Troop will have a group of beginner backpackers doing a 5 mile loop. The current plan is to have the two groups camp close to each other so that the Crew can help with teaching backpacking skills to the beginner backpackers. (Crew members, you can complete some Outdoor Bronze and / or Ranger requirements, by teaching the beginner backpackers new skills) (Permission required from Crew 2001) June 8, 9, and 10 – Zaleski State Forest, in Southern Ohio June Permission Slip “If you can do Zaleski, Philmont will look easy” a quote from the 2010 Philmont Crew after come back from Philmont. All I can say is “its Zaleski,” where hills are straight up and straight down and the only flat ground to be found is the parking lot! (Permission required from Crew 2001)
