      • This is a six day adventure which includes camping, swimming, hiking and exploring the area along the National Lakeshore including Sleeping Bear Dune in Northwest Michigan.  The Crew will spend 2 days backpacking on North Manitou Island, a designated remote wilderness area.  Participants in this activity will experience a moderate level of physical activity.  Limited cell phone service is expected in some locations.  Current BSA Annual Health and Medical Records are required to have Parts A, B & C completed.
      • AGENDA:    Wednesday June 27, the Crew will drive to Empire, Michigan.  Thursday will be spent exploring the National Lakeshore including a dune climb, swimming and/or lazy river tubing on the Platte River and a tour of the National Seashore Lifesaving Rescue Station Museum.  Friday we will board the ferry to N. Manitou Island for 2 days of backpacking.  Leave No Trace protocols will be strictly adhered to on the island.  Sunday we return to the mainland for a tour of the Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City, swimming and a walking tour of the city.  Monday, July 2 will be the return drive.

Troop One Backpackers
(ASM Biggs)
This is a group interested in developing their outdoor skills and to take part in backpacking.  Scouts learn and practice to qualify for regular backpacking trip.

One trip is during the May 18-20 Campout

March 23, 24 and 25 – Camp Butler and CVNP

Meet at Camp Butler on Friday night, Saturday morning hiking from Butler / Manatoc into the CVNP and back to Camp Butler and camp in one of the outpost campsites.  Total mileage will be around 8 to 10 miles. (Permission required from Crew 2001)

April 27, 28 and 29 - Hickory Creek Wilderness in the Allegheny National Forest

Meet at 1st Baptist church on Friday night and drive over to the trailhead at the Hearts Content campground.  Hit the trail on Sat morning and spend the night on the trail, 3 mile hike out on Sunday morning.  This is a loop trail total mileage around 12 – 14.  (Permission required from Crew 2001)

 
May 18, 19 and 20 – Raccoon Creek State Park, PA (only 100 miles from Akron)

We will be going in conjunction with Troop 1.  The Crew and Venture Patrol will be backing on the backpacking loop with a total mileage of around 15 miles.  The Troop will have a group of beginner backpackers doing a 5 mile loop.  The current plan is to have the two groups camp close to each other so that the Crew can help with teaching backpacking skills to the beginner backpackers.  (Crew members, you can complete some Outdoor Bronze and / or Ranger requirements, by teaching the beginner backpackers new skills)   (Permission required from Crew 2001)

“If you can do Zaleski, Philmont will look easy” a quote from the 2010 Philmont Crew after come back from Philmont.  All I can say is “its Zaleski,” where hills are straight up and straight down and the only flat ground to be found is the parking lot!
