Washington Super Trip

Troop One & Crew 2001 Go to Washington, DC

Thursday evening June 25 to Sunday June 28, 2009

Privately, a list of scouts attending and the adults accompanying them on the DC trip is available. There have been some changes and the final list will be to you June 17 at the latest.

Here are some highlights:

  1. There is a required meeting for all adults attending the DC trip on Tuesday June 23 in room 1 (or somewhere else since it is VBS and election day). Please attend since we will repeat the presentation and take up valuable trip time if everyone is not there.
  2. The scouts attending on June 23 should be all of those going to DC.
  3. We have 59 attending which is 36 youth and 23 adults.
  4. We have 54 seatbelts for 36 youth, so some of us will not be driving.
  5. The drivers list will come out with the attendance list or shortly afterward. If you prefer not to drive or if you feel it is essential to drive then let Robert Culp know. Otherwise, we will decide on who drives with the information we have. Preference is given to those who carry the most registered scouts.
  6. If you did not pay anticipating you would be driving and are not selected to drive, you will need to pay the $65 fee on the 23rd.
  7. If you are driving you are responsible for the gas, all tolls and parking. Estimates of this are above $65 and that was before the recent gas price rise. There is no reimbursement for gas, tolls or parking fees.
  8. The only parking fees are at Greenbelt Metro Friday night ($4.25) and Arlington Sunday morning ($1.75).
  9. Tolls are on PA turnpike (14.40 east bound, 10.00 west bound) and Ohio turnpike ($1.00 east bound, $1.00 west bound)
  10. Gas is gas… total miles are 727.

Old Post Office tower... third highest point in DC - maybe we get to go up in it.

After dinner and fun at the Old Post Office we will hike the National Mall.

The National Mall & Memorial Parks

The National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, D.C., was established in 1965. "The Mall is America's front porch -- open, accessible, and free -- a worthy wonder of a democratic society," says Brent D. Glass, director of the National Museum of American History. With 24 million visitors a year, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. (newscom.com)  From abcnews.go.com.  Click the picture for more pictures.

We will walk past the Washington Monument and see lots of monuments including the  Lincoln and Vietnam Veterans memorials and the ones shown below.

Scoutmaster’s Challenge: Each walking group must find an idea while downtown in a museum or a monument that will inspire an entirely new, never seen before skit. There just might be a prize involved (you never know).
